Give your team an agent in Google Chat
When your team needs a document summary, a new draft, or help with a defined spreadsheet task, they can describe the work in Google Chat. The agent works within the sources you connect and the tool permissions you grant.
Example
An everyday example
“Could you summarize last week’s meeting notes and draft a document with the follow-up tasks?”
If the relevant notes are accessible, the agent can review them and prepare a summary and follow-up draft. Your team checks key decisions and deadlines before sharing it.
This is an illustrative example, not an actual conversation.
- Describe the task in the Google Chat Space where your team works.
- Name the document or spreadsheet and explain what a useful result looks like.
- Review the summary, draft, or record update in your own workflow.
How does your team get started?
- 01
Sign in with Google
Follow the setup steps for a Google Chat agent in the console. Your account and organization need suitable access for this use.
- 02
Prepare sources and permissions
Identify the files or spreadsheet the agent should use. Grant the necessary Google and application permissions; describing a task does not grant access by itself.
- 03
Ask for the work and review it
Tell the agent what to do in the Space and what output you expect. Check documents you will share, updated records, and important commitments.
Two kinds of Google Chat Space, two purposes
- In a team agent’s Space, employees ask the agent to work with them directly.
- Separate management Spaces for WhatsApp and Instagram customer agents are where your team prepares their business information and working rules. Customer conversations stay in their respective channels.
- The files and actions available to an agent depend on the connected account’s access and the tool permissions granted in the application.
Frequently asked questions
Can the agent see all my Google Workspace files?
Your files are not all opened automatically. Available sources depend on the connected account’s access and the application permissions granted. Review the scope during setup.
Does this Google Chat agent answer customer messages?
Your team works directly with the agent in this Space. WhatsApp and Instagram customer conversations happen in their own channels; their management Spaces have a different purpose.
Does a person approve every document or record action?
Do not assume a separate approval step for every action. The agent can act within its defined task and permissions. Your team should review important changes and anything it plans to share externally.
